Experimental calls without K/W prefixes

These call letters were assigned in the early days of broadcasting, when broadcasts were considered experimental services. The same type of call was also assigned to amateur radio operators, except without the X or Y in the second character position (see next section). In later years, similar calls were issued with the standard K and W prefixes.
